“Trauma-informed care” has been a popular therapy buzzword in the last decade. This is because mental health research is just starting to understand the impact of trauma on the human brain. We now understand more about experiencing trauma materializes into unhelpful coping skills, fractured and stressed relationships, and even genetic changes. I view trauma-focused care as a lens in which I contextualize the experiences of my clients.
Most clients I work with have experienced some type of trauma. Traumatic experiences range from some type of abuse to combat-related traumas to relational traumas. No trauma is “better” or “worse” than another, and it’s important to realize that your experiences with and reactions to trauma are valid. You deserve to get the care you need to heal.
You and I will put our heads together to identify the ways trauma has impacted your life. We will look at everything from family history of trauma to how different identities has contributed to trauma. We can then begin to identify and practice coping skills and process the trauma in a way that feels safe to you. Healing from trauma is possible!
